Calgary completes acclimatisation of 80K travel lights to LED, expects $5M in annual savings

Calgary has finished replacing 80,000 travel lights with LED bulbs some-more than a year forward of schedule.

The plan cost $32 million and is approaching to save a city approximately $5 million a year in electricity costs.

The new LED fixtures focus light on a some-more slight area, a city said, concentrating enlightenment on streets and sidewalks and shortening light “spillage” upward, so shortening light pollution.

City roads executive Troy McLeod pronounced a appetite assets will be used to do lifecycle upkeep on other streetlight infrastructure such as light poles and subterraneous wires.

Some of a city’s subterraneous wiring is some-more than 50 years old.

There are about 90,000 travel lights in Calgary.

The city says it is still looking during ways to modify a remaining 10,000 to LED bulbs though remarkable many of them are “decorative in nature” and need some-more specialized fixtures.
