UFO 50 is an exciting project that is poised deliver a spectacular bundle of fifty 8-bit inspired indie games from a handful of the indie scene’s brightest stars.
Of all the indie developers involved, Derek Yu, the developer behind Spelunky, and Ojiro Fumoto of Downwell fame are probably the best known of the bunch. Other developers include Eirik Suhrke (Skorpulac), Jon Perry (Time Barons), and Paul Hubans (Madhouse).
The project will not just include typical indie platformers but also puzzle games, SHMUPS, sports game, and even RPGs. Man-oh-man, I’m drooling for some Dragon Quest clones.
Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities
The developers are pitching these games as the long lost masterpieces of a studio that never got its due back in the late 80s. I can totally get behind that premise. As for the games themselves:
The games are slightly smaller than commercial 8-bit titles from the 80’s, but rest assured that they are full games and not microgames or minigames! Completing the entire collection could easily take over a hundred hours.
