One of President Trump’s top aides bashed the Senate Majority Leader over health care on Wednesday.
“More excuses. @SenateMajLdr must have needed another 4 years – in addition to the 7 years — to repeal and replace Obamacare…..,†Dan Scavino Jr., Trump’s social media director, tweeted from his personal account Wednesday.
Scavino was responding to a clip of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blaming Trump for setting “early timelines” as one of the reasons that people believe Congress is getting nothing done.
“Part of the reason I think is that the storyline is that we haven’t done much is because, in part, the president and others have set these early timelines about things need to be done by a certain point,†McConnell said in Florence, Ky., Tuesday. “Our new president has of course not been in this line of work before. And I think had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the Democratic process.â€
Congress broke for their month-long recess last week, leaving behind a largely unsuccessful first half of the year. Despite a GOP majority in both the House and Senate, few of Trump’s campaign promises have passed both chambers and made it to the president’s desk.
In the most high-profile fail, the Senate came one vote short of securing a “skinny repeal†of Obamacare last month. The bill would have removed some of Obamacare’s mandates, but would have still needed to be reconciled with the House before it was sent to Trump.
The president has urged Congress to keep trying to repeal the health care law, but leaders, including McConnell, have suggested it is time to move onto tax reform.
