The day after President Trump attacked him on Twitter over his military service, Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he couldn’t explain the president’s behavior.
“I cannot explain the president’s obsession with me or any of the other targets of his tweets,” Blumenthal said Tuesday on Morning Joe.
Blumenthal insisted that the president’s tweets — which focused on Blumenthal lying about his military record in the Vietnam War — were meant to be a distraction from other issues, including the introduction of legislation designed to protect special counsel Robert Mueller.
“It’s not really about me,” he said. “I have no idea what’s in the president’s head…I’m determined not to be distracted.”
Blumenthal, a cosponsor of one of the bills, added that he believed that the special counsel measures would have “broad” bipartisan support when the Senate returned from its August break.
“Firing Bob Mueller would provoke a firestorm, a constitutional crisis, and our goal is to avert it,” he said.
