Happy Monday, OP peeps. The pace of news has slowed as it tends to do in August — though that hasn’t stopped our president from tweeting.
So of course one of our main stories of today is about a few choice tweets from the president. Also on the docket: Mike Pence is not pleased that people think he might want to run for president in 2020.
President Trump is up in Bedminster, N.J., for the next couple weeks, but he is working up there because of some renovations being done at the White House. “This is not a vacation – meetings and calls!” he tweeted over the weekend.
This totally explains why, during a day on which he had no public events planned and rain to contend with, he had the time to send out 13 tweets today (as of 5 p.m., anyway) on a variety of topics, from Sen. Richard Blumenthal’s lying about having served in Vietnam (while Blumenthal was in the Marine reserve after multiple deferments, he was never deployed) to “fake news” to how strong his base is.
Just a day in a Trump non-vacation, we guess.
Over the weekend, The New York Times published a story that contended Republicans are running a “shadow campaign” for 2020, suggesting that Vice President Pence is among those who are considering running for the GOP nomination.
And Pence is not pleased, to say the least.
“The allegations in this article are categorically false and represent just the latest attempt by the media to divide this administration,” he said in a statement. “Whatever fake news may come our way, my entire team will continue to focus all our efforts to advance the President’s agenda and see him re-elected in 2020. Any suggestion otherwise is both laughable and absurd.”
OK, Mr. Vice President. We hear you.
