NHL 18’s Threes mode looks insane, and you can use mascots

In case you’re new to TechnoBuffalo, know this: I’m a hockey fan. Probably the most diehard on the staff. I’ve been infatuated with the Pittsburgh Penguins since their back-to-back Cup runs in the early 90s.

That means I also have a soft spot for Iceburgh, the only sports mascot to get into an all-out kitchen brawl with Jean-Claude Van Damme on film. Maybe, that’s just a guess, as I have no possible way to verify that claim.

Now I can enjoy Iceburgh in a new way. EA Sports debuted a new gameplay trailer for their upcoming Threes mode, an arcade style addition to NHL 18 that features all sorts of ridiculous including the ability to play as your favorite mascots. Lace ‘em up, Iceburgh.

If you’re familiar with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era, you might remember a game called 3 on 3 NHL Arcade. That featured the same 3-on-3 hook, but the visual style and play were even more arcade-like. Hopefully, this new Threes mode splits the difference.

NHL 18 drops on September 15, 2017, for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
