Thanks to hefty discounts, free Apple TVs, and subscriptions to HBO GO, DirecTV Now enjoyed strong interest when it made its debut last fall, with more than 200,000 people signing up in the first month alone. But since those discounts and incentives disappeared, growth has stalled as ATT struggles to convince consumers to cough up $35 a month.
According to a Bloomberg report, DirecTV Now actually lost around 3,000 subscribers back in February after reaching a peak of 380,000 users in January, while growth remained flat in March. Now ATT is hoping for a more successful summer by offering up a free Roku Premiere box in an effort to encourage more signups.
The giveaway comes just weeks after DirecTV Now expanded its reach to Roku devices. It was already available on the fourth-generation Apple TV, Amazon’s Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Google Chromecast, iPhone and iPad, Android-powered devices, and in web browsers.
To take advantage of the new offer, you’ll need to signup and prepay for your first two months of service, according to Variety. Prices start at $35 a month for around 60 channels, $50 a month for more than 80 channels, and $60 a month for more than 100 channels. ATT also offers a “Gotta Have It†option which offers over 120 channels for $70 a month.
