It’s been roughly three months since Apple officially launched the AirPods, and people are still asking the question: Are they worth it?
The answer is yes (and no).
They AirPods are pretty much EarPods with a few fancy tricks. The biggest reason to buy them is how seamlessly they pair with Apple gear. Literally pop the case cover open and they connect. It’s that simple.
Seamlessly connecting AirPods to other Apple devices is much easier compared to other Bluetooth accessories. I have a pair of Jaybird X2, but switching between my iPhone and MacBook became so annoying I now use a separate pair of Sony earphones designated for my computer. The AirPods and its W1 chip solve this dilemma.
Add to that a surprisingly great battery life and the AirPods feel well worth the $169. Moving outside the Apple ecosystem, however, we can’t justify the steep price. The sound you receive from the AirPods is comparable to what’s found in the $30 EarPods. Plus, its design is a one-size-fits-all approach that can be very uncomfortable for long periods of time.
My Jaybird X2 came with three different rubber and foam tips to find the perfect fit for my ear—the AirPods don’t offer this. And I got the X2 for under $90 on Amazon, $70 below the $169 price of the AirPods.
The moral of the story is, if you chose to stay within the Apple walled garden, buy the AirPods. If not, look elsewhere because there are better sounding and more economical options everywhere.
