You’ll be able to speak with random folks over matchmaking in Splatoon 2 when it hits the Nintendo Switch this summer.
Nintendo officially confirmed the inclusion of voice chat in Splatoon 2 during their recent investor briefing. Following that, the Japanese Twitter account for Splatoon sent out tweets regarding voice chat and matchmaking. Here’s the rundown of everything said so far.
First, the word from Nintendo’s investor meeting:
Splatoon 2 in particular will offer voice chat, a much-requested feature from our overseas fans, using smart-devices and the ability to bring eight Nintendo Switch systems together for eight-person local multiplayer. In this way, we are working to create titles and environments to invigorate the competitive gaming scene so that a wider demographic of customers can enjoy, talk about, and continue playing the Nintendo Switch.
Next, the tweets. They’re in Japanese, but Google Translate or Bing built into Twitter work just fine.

The tweets essentially say that Splatoon 2 is being developed to work with Nintendo’s upcoming smartphone app for the Nintendo Switch. That’ll handle matchmaking and voice chat. The second tweet says that players will be able to talk to everyone in the lobby ahead of the match, and that it’ll filter chat down to just teammates once the game starts.
It’s Nintendo’s plan to launch a smartphone app for the Nintendo Switch. This app will handle matchmaking and voice chat. Normally, I can picture how companies intend for things to work when described or shown off. Here?
I’m confused.
