Pinocchio Signature Collection: Blu-ray Review
The Disney Signature Collection is back with its third release, Pinocchio. If this isn’t already in your film collection then you need to get on it immediately.
The Pinocchio Signature Collection set brings all the best features of Disney home. The second full-length animated film the Disney studio ever produced has been in the vault since the Platinum Edition released in 2009, but if you missed out on that one, you’ve received a second chance at this beautiful restoration of a classic film.
We won’t bore you with a recap of the story of a wooden boy who dreams of becoming a real boy. It’s unlikely there’s anyone on this planet who isn’t already familiar with it. Suffice to say this is actually one of the darker Disney films in its themes, but that doesn’t mean it won’t entertain the young ones for years to come.
To the Blu-ray itself, it’s a fantastic presentation of Pinocchio with full restored color. Unless you picked up the aforementioned 2009 edition, it’s highly unlikely you’ve ever seen the film look quite this crisp.
Disney also took the time to really pile on the bonus features to this edition including all the bonuses from previous releases as well as a few new ones. The roster includes the following, plus more:
- Walt’s Story Meetings: Pleasure Island – The Pleasure Island scene in “Pinocchio†had much more development than what is seen in the film. Join Pixar’s Pete Docter and Disney historian and author J.B. Kaufman as they explore artwork recently discovered in Disney’s animation research library revealing some of the attractions, gags and games, which Disney animators created for this iconic location of the film, that never made it on screen.
- In Walt’s Words – “Pinocchio†– Hear Walt himself discuss the making of “Pinocchio†through archival recordings and interviews.
- The Pinocchio Project: “When You Wish Upon a Star†– Music influencers Alex G, Tanner Patrick and JR Aquino from Disney’s Maker Studios, a global leader in short-form videos, gather in a creative workspace to create their rendition of the film’s signature song, “When You Wish Upon a Star,†and produce a fresh new music video.
- Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in “Poor Papa†– This recently restored and scored 1927 short features Oswald the Lucky Rabbit who gets multiple visits from the stork and is forced to attempt various methods to help stop the onslaught of baby deliveries.
- Classic Bonus Features – These offerings from prior home entertainment releases include hours of bonus material, such as the making of “Pinocchio,†deleted scenes, sing-alongs, storyboards and theatrical trailers.
In this day and age of digital and streaming, it’s easy to wonder why you would still want to pick up a release such as the Pinocchio Signature Collection, but that is where Disney has really been a beacon of forward thinking as of late. The Blu-ray set also includes the film on DVD – with a lower resolution than the Blu-ray – as well as a redemption code for the digital copy. As with all Disney films, this means you will be able to access the film via the Disney Movies Anywhere service which syncs your purchases across multiple digital platforms, making it available from iTunes, Google Play, Vudu and more.
Unless you own a previous copy of this film, you have to pick this up. Even then, depending on which edition you have, this could still be a worthy addition to your collection thanks to the multiple formats, added bonus features and the high-quality restoration.
… and its Pinocchio. Who doesn’t love watching Pinocchio?
This is a definite buy for film lovers, Disney fans, kids… if you have a pulse, you should own this film.
