The little-known condition that will leave 7,000 Canadians deaf in one ear, if not treated quickly
Imagine waking adult unexpected deaf in one ear. Musician and composer Richard Einhorn has lived by it.
In Jun 2010, a 64-year-old New Yorker awoke to his ears ringing.
“The initial thing we consider of, of course, is a mind swelling or a stroke,” he said. At a time, he was in upstate Massachusetts, distant from help. So he called a cab and went to a closest hospital.
Doctors eventually told him it was sudden sensorineural conference loss (SSHL) —  a little-known and not good accepted condition that affects one chairman per 5,000 each year, according to a U.S. National Institutes of Health. At that rate, a condition would impact about 7,000 Canadians a year.
What doctors do know: that many people diagnosed with it are between a ages of 40 and 60; that group and women can be equally afflicted; and that it customarily customarily affects one ear.Â
Einhorn, who couldn’t hear good in his other ear due to a pre-existing condition, was left totally deaf.

Doctors don’t know too most about what causes SSHL.Â

“What this is is an inconvenience,” he said. “Music doesn’t sound as absolute as it used to — and that’s a genuine shame. And we skip it deeply.”
