The gaming world is still reeling from the cancellation of Scalebound, but I doubt anybody is taking it harder than those who sunk over two years of hard work into it. Platinum Games and Director Hideki Kamiya himself both issued statements on the cancellation overnight, and both apologized for feeling they let down their fans.
Platinum Games’ official blog had the company’s statement in an open letter to fans written by CEO Kenichi Sato himself.
We’re sorry to say that on January 9, 2017, Microsoft Studios announced the cancellation of Scalebound. We are very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were.
Going forward, we will strive to continue delivering high-quality games to you, starting with NieR:Automata in March, and including products like GRANBLUE FANTASY Project Re:Link and LOST ORDER in the future.
We will keep working hard to meet your expectations and we look forward to your continued support!
President and CEO
Kenichi Sato
Platinum Games’ making a misstep with Scalebound is rough for fans of action games, but it is even harder to see Kamiya take a hit. He’s both an excellent game visionary and an amazing personality around the Internet.
His apology comes heartful through his favorite channel, his Twitter account.
As you may have already heard, Scalebound has unfortunately been canceled. I’m very sorry to everyone who was looking forward to this game.

Sorry to bring you such bad news at the start of the year. All I can do for you is to promise to keep delivering fun games.

I’ll work extra hard to never have to let you down like this again, so I hope you will keep watching over us in the future too.

He also denied rumors of “mental health†issues.
And…I took time off for my mental health? …Me!?
No way.

So while we might not get to play Scalebound, we’ll always have Devil May Cry, Okami Bayonetta, and Viewitful Joe and every other magical game he has touched over the years.
