Bruce Willis’s wife Emma Heming Willis shared a touching tribute to the actor while discussing the ‘next chapter of his life’, three years after his dementia diagnosis.

In a heartwarming Instagram message for World Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) Awareness Week, Heming Willis, 50, praised her husband, 71, for being a ‘legend’ while sharing a rare photo of him.

‘I can’t go through World FTD Awareness Week without talking about Bruce. He is the driving force behind my advocacy,’ she wrote.

‘He has opened so many doors for me in this work, and I will continue to walk through them.’

Heming Willis went on to say that she ‘will not let his diagnosis be in vain’, adding, ‘I know how proud he would be to know that he is helping families living with FTD, other forms of dementia and their care partners be seen and heard.’

She concluded the post writing, ‘In this next chapter of his life, Bruce continues to build on his legacy. He is, and always will be, a f*****g legend. And I am so proud to be his wife.’

Willis’s daughter Scout Willis, 35, whom he shares with ex-wife Demi Moore, 63, commented, ‘I’m so proud of you I love you so much Emma.’

Another fan wrote, ‘Such an icon!!! Everyone loves Bruce Willis!’

‘You are both incredible humans,’ someone else added.

The iconic actor – who has been married to Heming Willis since 2009 – was diagnosed with FTD in 2023.

In August, Heming Willis talked honestly about her conflicted feelings while celebrating a major milestone in her life amid her husband’s battle with FTD.

She turned 50-years-old in June and opened up about the tough decision to have a gathering with loved ones amid caring for her husband.

Willis has retreated from the Hollywood spotlight since his family went public with his FTD diagnosis in 2023 after he was initially diagnosed with the neurological disorder aphasia.

FTD is a rare and progressive form of dementia that affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, often leading to changes in personality, behavior or language, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Heming Willis is now Willis’s primary caregiver, though he resides in a separate residence from his wife and two young daughters – Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12 – with a full-time care team.

Heming Willis told Hoda Kotb on her Making Space podcast: ‘I, you know, have not really been in the celebratory feelings of late.’

‘I was unsure if I really wanted to do anything, but I had a friend of mine who kept sort of pushing and saying, “You know what? You don’t wanna miss out on your 50th. You have to celebrate in some form or fashion.” And I really sat with that, and I thought about it. And I thought, “You know what? I don’t wanna look back and think, why didn’t I celebrate 50?”‘

Though she recognized the need to celebrate her personal milestone, she did struggle with the decision at the time.

Heming Willis said: ‘I always wrestle with it, you know?’

‘I think guilt is something that I am always carrying, but I’ve learned that it is really not helpful. What I know is I always go back to what would my husband want for me?’

She does believe that her famous husband would want her to have a ‘big fun bash’ as she added: ‘He would want me to celebrate my life with my friends and family.’

Heming Willis previously opened up about the heartbreaking reality of having to grieve the star while he’s still alive.

She provided rare insight on what it’s like caring for the ailing actor while appearing on an episode of The Bossticks podcast, with the author admitting she is ‘consistently in grief.’

She also shared the ‘very common misconception’ about frontotemporal dementia.

Heming Willis explained that FTD has ‘three different variants’ and that Willis’s variant primarily affects his ability to communicate.

‘The one that Bruce has affects language. But there’s another variant that will affect behavior and another one that could affect movement.’

She shared that people often confuse FTD with Alzheimer’s disease, which affects memory.

‘That’s a different part of the brain. So when people say, “Oh, does he remember who you are?” Well, he does because he doesn’t have Alzheimer’s, he has FTD,’ she said.

‘I think that’s a very common misconception that, when you think of dementia, we think of memory loss.’

Heming Willis then detailed the incredible emotional burden that Willis’s FTD has put on her and their family, which includes his ex-wife Moore, and the former couple’s three adult daughters – Rumer, 37, Scout and Tallulah, 32.

She cited Dr Pauline Boss who ‘coined the term ambiguous loss,’ which means to ‘grieve someone who is alive.’

‘And that is what many people who are caregivers to someone with dementia experience, because your person is there physically, but maybe not mentally or emotionally,’ she explained.

‘I think what you experience with any form of dementia is it just takes. You know these diseases they take and they take, sometimes very slowly and you are grieving different losses all the time.’

‘So you are constantly in grief. I’ve just learned how to navigate it.’

Last year, Heming Willis published a book – titled The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path – detailing her experience caring for Willis as well as helping caregivers learn to ‘care for themselves while they navigate a loved one’s dementia.’

In March, she also launched The Emma Bruce Willis Fund which ‘works to confront frontotemporal dementia by raising awareness, funding early-stage research, and supporting caregivers.’

Back in 2022, Willis’s family announced that he was retiring from acting following his aphasia diagnosis.

How should families balance personal happiness with caring for a loved one battling dementia?

What’s your view?

Less than a year later, his FTD diagnosis was revealed via a family statement shared with the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.

‘While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,’ his family wrote at the time.

They described FTD as a ‘cruel disease’ that ‘can strike anyone.’

‘For people under 60, FTD is the most common form of dementia, and because getting the diagnosis can take years, FTD is likely much more prevalent than we know.’

His family also noted that Willis ‘would want to respond by bringing global attention and a connectedness with those who are also dealing with this debilitating disease and how it impacts so many individuals and their families.’
