Key U.S. Borrowing Rate Near 20-Year High as Oil Prices Fluctuate

The interest rate on a key U.S. government bond reached a nearly two-decade high, oil prices remained elevated and stock markets wavered on Tuesday amid intensifying turmoil in global markets.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note briefly reached 5.04 percent, its highest since 2007, which could filter through to higher rates on mortgages, business loans and other debt linked to government borrowing costs. Investors have shown increasing concerns about inflation and the direction of policy ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting to set interest rates, which concludes on Wednesday.

At the same time, the widening war in Iran is exacerbating worries about the flow of oil exports from the Middle East, putting upward pressure on oil, gasoline and diesel prices.
