Jim Carrey breaks silence on The Mask director Chuck Russell’s death at 74 as he reflects on filmmaker’s impact on his career

Jim Carrey has broken silence after director Chuck Russell, best known for 1994’s The Mask, passed away at age 74.

According to TMZ, the Hollywood heavyweight ‘died unexpectedly at his San Diego-area home’ on Wednesday.

Russell was behind some of the biggest hits of the ’80s and ’90s, including the 1988 remake of the horror classic The Blob and the blockbuster comedy hit The Mask, which helped turn Carrey into a household name. 

The actor, 64, reflected on working with Russell on set of The Mask and labeled the experience a ‘privilege.’ 

Carrey told TMZ on Friday, ‘I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who, during the shooting of The Mask, created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set.’

He added that the director brought a ‘playfulness’ to set which ‘inspired’ both the cast and crew.

‘Every one of us has been many years blessed by that buoyant and timeless moment. I consider The Mask one of the jewels of my creative life. Thank you, Chuck.’ 

The publication also reported that the local fire department were called to Russell’s home on Wednesday afternoon following a report of a medical emergency involving an unconscious male.

His cause of death remains unknown.

He is survived by Ania, his wife of 19 years, and his three children, Logan, Riley, and Carlyn. 

He also directed 1996’s Eraser with Arnold Schwarzenegger and 2002’s The Scorpion King starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Both movies were box office hits.

His first film was A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, which launched the career of Patricia Arquette.

The horror sequel was a hit and well received by critics, launching Russell’s career in the genre. 

His career started to wind down in the 2000s, with Russell taking a hiatus from directing after The Scorpion King.

Russell also directed one of Bruce Willis’s final films, 2022’s Paradise City with John Travolta

He returned in 2016 with the John Travolta-fronted I Am Wrath, but the vigilante action-thriller was savaged by critics and bombed at the box office. 

Russell then directed the 2019 Bollywood movie Junglee, followed by another Travolta project in 2022 called Paradise City.

Paradise City, which co-starred an ailing Bruce Willis, was another critical and commercial flop.

Russell’s final film as a director was 2024’s supernatural thriller Witchboard, which he also co-wrote and was a remake of the 1986 film of the same name.

While Witchboard failed to light up the box office, it fared somewhat better with critics, who praised it as a welcome throwback to the horror films of the ’80s and ’90s.

In one of his final interviews, which was held last year to promote the release of Witchboard, Russell expressed how excited he was to return to the horror genre. 

‘I never meant to be away from horror this long. I always intended to go back. I had different ideas in my notebook, but I didn’t want to get pegged as a horror director after A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and The Blob,’ he explained to Rue Morgue. 

‘Thankfully, those films were very well received and still remembered, but I wanted to top myself in the genre. I didn’t want to go back to horror until I felt I had something that I could move the game ahead for myself and for my audience.’
