Jason Bateman revealed the cheapest people he’s ever met while discussing how hard he worked to help financially support his family as a child actor.
‘I have got some friends that are incredibly wealthy because their parents were incredibly wealthy,’ Bateman recalled.
‘And they inherited a bunch of money, and they’re the tightest people I know because they never… they didn’t make that money,’ he explained, ‘and so they feel every dollar out they’re not going to be able to get back.’
The Daily Mail has reached out to Bateman’s rep for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
The Emmy-winning director added: ‘I feel enormously fortunate that things have worked out for me. Knocking on wood. Where I don’t have to take jobs that aren’t creatively exciting for me.’

Bateman – whose net worth is reportedly $50 million – immediately felt a cultural divide with trust-fund kids, who inherited all of their wealth
Bateman launched his four-decade career when he was just a child, with roles in Golden Grahams commercials, Little House on the Prairie and Silver Spoons, before graduating to roles in his tens in Teen Wolf Too and The Hogan Family.
Bateman’s parents, Kent and Victoria, were his managers, so there was added pressure on him to earn as much as possible, maintain a decent GPA for work permits and ‘not get fired.’
‘It was rough but, as anxiety inducing as that was, there was also this early muscle that I kind of developed where I knew I could generate money,’ the eighties teen idol told Vulture’s Good One podcast.
‘So I was, sort of, not that nervous about spending money because I felt I could replace it.’
While the DTF St. Louis producer–star made the remarks during Tribeca Festival’s live taping on June 13, the clip of him calling trust-fund babies cheap just recently went viral on Reddit.
‘I know two different people who have inherited millions and both are the most selfish, greedy people I’ve ever met,’ Reddit user @mkd0513 wrote Tuesday.
‘And both BLOW through their money at a ridiculous rate… So I feel like it’s probably a mixed bag and more to do with how you were raised than anything.’
Reddit user @boba_toes revealed the cheapest person she ever PA-ed for on a film shoot was an A-lister – not Gwyneth Paltrow – who ‘also had unbelievably wealthy parents and grew up extremely rich from birth.’

Reddit user @LordyIHopeThereIsPie wrote that ‘the most insufferable tightwad I know is from generational wealth. He never gave us a wedding present when we got married’
‘Same. My ex came from an old money family in Spain. I had no idea the guy was old money because he wore new balances (NOT popular in 2005), drove a Suzuki and lived with four roommates,’ Reddit user @ShakesDontBreak wrote

‘It took him six months to tell me how wealthy his family was. And when I asked why he didn’t show off his wealth he said 1.) Old money doesn’t flaunt wealth because that’s tacky and in poor taste 2.) The money is inherited, so it would be shameful if the current generation loses the money that has been in the family for centuries 3.) You can’t stay wealthy if you spend it all.’
