Miley Cyrus’ father Billy Ray, 64, reveals he almost DIED before falling in love with Elizabeth Hurley

Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus almost died in 2024.

The father of Miley Cyrus told People during his cover interview that he came down with sepsis and had to be hospitalized.

The health crisis was so serious he was diagnosed with vocal paralysis which has made it challenging for him to work.

‘I don’t know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare,’ the 64-year-old star shared with the publication.

Cyrus added that his entire body was ‘swollen’ when he was at his lowest point and he was even told by doctors to get his ‘affairs in order’ suggesting he would not have much longer to live.

But then a miracle happened as he suddenly got healthy again. ‘I had a prayer answered,’ he said, thanking God. ‘That’s a miracle.’

Now he is coming out with his first album in 14 years, The Hill. 

In 2024, he suffered from vocal paralysis and had to go into voice rehab.

‘Noah’s got that one song, Don’t Put It All on Me, that honestly saved my life,’ he said as he noted his daughter’s lyrics ‘Some days, we might fall apart / But we’re never broken’ inspired him to get his voice back.

And he thanked Braison’s son Bear, five.

‘In this very broken moment of my life, my little grandson Bear looked at me and said, ‘Try again,” he said.

‘And up until that moment, he had never spoken to me at all. I wasn’t even sure if he knew my name. 

‘In that moment I thought, ‘He’s telling you something.’ Is it about love? Music? Somehow, I got to try again at both. So I’m learning to try again.’

He has been dating Elizabeth Hurley since early 2025.

‘Elizabeth would say to me, ‘Do you understand your voice is coming back?’ She encouraged me to the point where she had me do The Masked Singer [season 14 aired in February]. 

‘And she said, ‘You need to do it to challenge yourself.’ And I thought, ‘God, why is she so smart?”

Now he has ‘finally found this wonderful place where I’m happy.’

‘I’m singing— I’ve been singing every day. I feel so good about my voice,’ he shared. ‘This might be one of the better moments.’

The Flowers singer was recognized at a ceremony in Hollywood and couldn’t keep her emotions in check when it came to thanking her loved ones for their support.

Miley – who was accompanied at the ceremony by her mother Tish Cyrus, sister Brandi Cyrus and fiancé Maxx Morando – said in her speech: ‘This is where it gets me.

‘To my family, my future family, parents, my mom, my siblings, my friends, my collaborators, thank you for loving and supporting not only the choices that I make, but my fears, and then facing them with me.’

The Wrecking Ball hitmaker continued: ‘Today is something that I’ll never forget and I’m always going to cherish. I love you all so much, thank you.’

Miley had referenced her song Walk of Fame (which ends with the line ‘you’ll live forever’) earlier during her speech and described receiving the star as ‘an accumulation of devotion’.
