Stefano Gabbana is hanging up his chairman role at Dolce Gabbana four decades after cofounding the fashion house alongside former partner Domenico Dolce.
The 63-year-old fashion designer’s resignation was announced on Friday, April 10, stating that he will not be leaving the atelier altogether as he is still stitching together the brand’s creative vision.
“As part of a natural evolution of its organizational structure and governance, the Dolce Gabbana Group confirms that Stefano Gabbana has tendered his resignation, effective as of 1 January 2026, from his positions within Dolce Gabbana Holding Srl, Dolce Gabbana Trademarks Srl and Dolce Gabbana Srl,” according to a statement from the company, per Vogue.
The spokesperson added, “These resignations have no impact whatsoever on the creative activities carried out by Stefano Gabbana on behalf of the group.”
Domenico’s brother, Alfonso Dolce, who currently serves as CEO, assumed the role of chairman in January. DG has more than 30 million followers on Instagram, continuing to expand their brand with high-end clothing, shoes, jewelry, watches, perfumes and cosmetics.
Vogue spoke out amid reports which claimed Gabbana was planning to exit his 40 percent stake. The fashion house’s lenders are reportedly up to $175 million in new funding as part of a broader refinancing plan for the company’s $525.7 million of debt, Bloomberg reported.

In order to cover the costs, execs for the luxury Italian fashion house were considering offloading real estate and renewing licenses to raise funds.
“With regard to the debt position, the group has no statement to make at this time, as negotiations with the banks are still ongoing,” the company said in the Friday statement.
Gabbana stepped out for the DG show in February, during which Madonna sat front-row. An A-list appearance is a common occurrence at their runway events, as Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci channeled their iconic The Devil Wears Prada characters at their show in September 2025.
