Viola Davis Says She Wore Platform Sneakers at the 2017 Oscars Red Carpet
Viola Davis ditched her heels at the 2017 Oscars.
Davis, 60, opened up about the secret detail behind her 2017 Oscars outfit while chatting with Jimmy Fallon during the Tuesday, March 10, episode of The Tonight Show. During their exchange, Fallon, 51, asked the actress what she remembered from the evening, where she took home an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
“I won an Oscar. What do you think?” she laughed. “But underneath that dress — this is what I think because I see them every single time — I have on platform sneakers that were specially made for me that were probably seven inches high.”
“Really?!” Fallon questioned her. “You’re wearing sneakers there?”
“I was wearing sneakers right there!” she said while Fallon held up a photo of her accepting the award. That’s what I remember about that moment.”
Davis also recalled that her Madame Tussauds wax figure is wearing the same red dress she wore at the Oscars.
“I think I have the best wax figure,” she said. “It freaked me right the hell out.”

While she isn’t nominated for any Oscars this year, the A-lister said that she’s hoping Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, takes home an award.
Davis has also been in attendance at other awards shows this season, including the 2026 Actor Awards, where she presented Jordan, 39, with the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. She told Fallon that during the ceremony, she experienced a wardrobe malfunction.
“I did rip my dress open, I did,” she shared. “But it’s all good!” Davis stunned in a shimmery blue off-the-shoulder dress featuring a fitted bodice and an A-line pleated skirt. She accessorized with a diamond necklace and matching rings. Davis completed her look with her chin-length hair parted to the side and styled in loose waves.
