Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Indianapolis Fire Department on June 3, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police report. Morris was later charged with murder, according to the Indianapolis Star.

The AirTag is a small, portable device launched in April of 2021 designed to help people locate their belongings, such as keys and wallets. But concerns have been raised about the tracker’s GPS locating unsuspecting people, with model Brooks Nader saying she was tracked after a stranger had slipped the device into her coat. Apple announced in February new safety features to notify people of how to navigate unwanted tracking.

“AirTag was designed to help people locate their personal belongings, not to track people or another person’s property, and we condemn in the strongest possible terms any malicious use of our products,” Apple said in a statement earlier this year. Messages made to Apple by USA TODAY regarding the latest incident were not immediately returned.
