Jared Leto’s method acting on the set has come under fire in the past, including his controversial ‘gifts’ to his Suicide Squad cast members… though he seems to have taken this to a whole new level in Morbius.

The 50-year-old actor plays biochemist Michael Morbius, who has been working feverishly to find a cure from the rare blood disease he suffers from, and accidentally infects himself with an ancient form of vampirism instead.

The film’s director, Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Life) spoke with Uproxx confirmed a bizarre story interviewer Mike Ryan had heard, revealing that Leto would even stay in character between takes… which resulted in longer bathroom breaks.

Leto’s character Michael Morbius had been so weakened by this rare blood condition that he often required crutches.

The method actor would stay in character the entire time on set, even between takes, with Ryan stating that he heard Leto was ‘so committed’ to playing Morbius he would, ‘use his crutches and slowly limp to go to the bathroom.’

Ryan added that he heard it began to be an issue, because, ‘he was taking so long’ for the bathroom breaks that lead to a deal being made, ‘to get him a wheelchair so someone could wheel him there quicker and he agreed to that.’

Espinosa confirmed the story was true, while detailing why he thinks Leto needs to go to such extreme lengths for his character.

‘Because I think that what Jared thinks, what Jared believes, is that somehow the pain of those movements, even when he was playing normal Michael Morbius, he needed, because he’s been having this pain his whole life,’ Espinosa explained.

The director continued, ‘Even though, as he’s alive and strong, it has to be a difference. Hey, man, it’s people’s processes.’

‘All of the actors believe in processes. And you, as director, you support whatever makes it as good as you can be,’ the filmmaker added.

When asked if something like that would be frustrating to a director – on a big-budget movie where time is always of the essence – Espinosa said that he thinks, ‘But it’s more that I think the directors that don’t like actors get really frustrated about that.’

He added, ‘I think it’s really mysterious, what they do. Almost all actors, in general, have their own reputation of being an interesting person how he works with their characters. I think that all of them have these traits. If you want a completely normal person that does only things that you understand, then you’re in the wrong business.’

‘Because what’s different is what makes them tick. It’s very hard to be able to say, “I can take this part away and I will still get the same stuff from him.” I don’t do that. I’m more to see like, “Hey, if you’re doing this, we have to do this,”‘ he explained.

Morbius debuted in theaters this past weekend, opening in the top spot at the box office with just over $39 million.

It has taken in another $44 million from foreign markets for a worldwide debut of $88.7 million from a reported budget of a relatively-modest $75 million.
