Scream, the fifth installment of the slasher franchise of the same name, nabbed the No. 1 spot at the box office over the four-day holiday weekend with a projected $36M gross across 3,664 theaters.

It’s an impressive debut for the old horror movie series originated by late, great Wes Craven way back in 1996.

And Scream is not just scary as it currently holds a 75% critic approval rating (out of 189 reviews) and an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.  

The return of Ghostface! Scream, the fifth installment of the slasher franchise, nabbed the No. 1 spot at the box office over the four-day holiday weekend with a projected $36M gross across 3,664 theaters

Deadline reported that the success was partially due to savvy marketing tie-ins with Airbnb, Visible, Urban Outfitters, Spotify, Fanta, OXXO, Cereal Killer Café.

The cast, like Courteney Cox, used their millions of social media followers to drum up interest in the continuation, which was heavily promoted on Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook.

Director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin tweeted a ‘huge thank you to everyone going to see Scream opening weekend.’

And co-director Tyler Gillett hoped that everyone had ‘as much fun watching it as we did making it.’

Garth Jennings’ star-studded animated sequel Sing 2 earned $11M over the weekend, with a global total of $214.7M since opening December 22.

Matthew Vaughn’s action-packed prequel The King’s Man landed in the No. 4 spot with $29.3M adding to the total $76.2M at the global box office since December 26.

And coming in fifth this weekend was Simon Kinberg’s feminist action flick The 355 with $8.9M in its second weekend for a global total of $9.3M.

The final five spots at the top 10 box office this weekend were (in order) American Underdog, Belle, West Side Story, Licorice Pizza, and Matrix Resurrections.

Second place: Spider-Man: No Way Home was scared to the No. 2 spot with $26M gross over the four-day weekend adding to the global total of $1.625B since opening December 17

Third place: Garth Jennings’ star-studded animated sequel Sing 2 earned $11M over the weekend, with a global total of $214.7M since opening December 22
