Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, whose presidential campaign has struggled to gain traction, is turning his guns on GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
On Monday, Paul released a three-page statement blasting Trump as a “fake conservative.â€
Our colleagues at the Louisville Courier-Journalhave the story
“This is a guy who said in 1999 that he was a strong supporter of the United Nations. He was for partial birth abortion before he was against it. He lavished praise on the bank bailouts,†Paul said in the statement. “He was for Obamacare before he was against it and has said he’s ‘liberal on health care.’â€
Paul said that instead of advancing anti-Washington policies, Trump’s comments are “all blather, non-sequitur, and self-aggrandizing bombast.â€
Paul said, “What do you do to a bully? You stand up to him. That’s what I did on the debate stage and I was the only one.â€
During Thursday’s presidential debate, Paul challenged Trump from the beginning, when the businessmen refused to rule out an independent bid for the White House if he loses the GOP nomination.
“He’s already hedging his bet on the Clintons, OK? So if he doesn’t run as a Republican, maybe he supports (Hillary) Clinton, or maybe he runs as an independent,†Paul said. “But I’d say that he’s already hedging his bets because he’s used to buying politicians.â€
He later jumped in to attack Trump for supporting a single-payer healthcare plan.
