Lizzo has defended her decision to wear a face mask after apparently getting backlash for her move. The 31-year-old rapper took to Instagram on Friday, March 20 to set things straight and reveal her current health issue, though it’s not as dire as the coronavirus disease.

In a now-deleted post, the “Juice” raptress shared a photo of her mouth and wrote over it, “Got strep at the worst time ever.” She continued to explain why she’s wearing a face mask, “It’s nobody’s business but I’d prefer y’all not criticize me for wearing a face mask and doing what I was supposed to do to protect the people in my home.”

In the caption, she clapped back at the trolls, telling them, “Please check yourself before you become an internet bully because you’re bored. Get your facts straight. The world needs less trolls and more compassion.”

Prior to having strep throat, Lizzo made use of her social media account to “promote healing” during the global coronavirus pandemic. On Friday, March 13, she led fans in a 30-minute “mass meditation,” during which she played the flute to help put the mind, body, and soul of her followers at ease. She captioned the footage, “A meditation and mantra to promote healing during this global crisis. Use at your own pace. Love you!”

Addressing the health crisis, the Grammy Award-winning artist said in the video, “There’s the disease, and then there’s the fear of the disease. Fear can spread so much hatred and negative energy.” She added, “I wanted to empower everyone and let you all know, you have power. We all have power. You have power to eliminate fear. We have the power to reduce the fear that is being heightened.”

“This is a very serious pandemic,” she continued. “This is a very serious thing that we’re all experiencing together. Whether it’s a good thing or a tragic thing – the one thing we will always have is togetherness. We’ll always be connected on this planet.”
