INDIANAPOLIS — Within moments of the NBA announcing it was suspending its season after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Big Ten Network discussed the apparent ill health of Fred Hoiberg. A few minutes later, Hoiberg left the sideline following the final media timeout of his team’s 89-64 loss to Indiana Wednesday in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

Throughout the game, there were signs of Hoiberg appearing ill — coughing and holding his head in his hands. Team officials were seen going back and forth between the locker room and the team bench late in the game, and the teams did not exchange handshakes following the game — except for an elbow bump between Archie Miller and Nebraska assistant Doc Sadler.

Nebraska players and coaches were unavailable for postgame news conferences. No further comment was given.

Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported Hoiberg was taken to an Indianapolis hospital.

Indiana players also did not attend postgame news conference as Archie Miller said, “I decided to move those guys as fast as we possibly can, get cleaned up and go to the hotel as fast as possible.”

Earlier Wednesday, the NCAA announced March Madness would be played behind closed doors, and then the Big Ten followed suit, but not until after the start of Wednesday’s first-round action at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, which included fans.
