Los Angeles FC’s Carlos Vela further cemented his near-certain MVP campaign by setting Major League Soccer’s single-season goals scored record with a hat trick in Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids at Banc of California Stadium.
Vela broke a tie with Josef Martinez — who set the record during Atlanta United’s MLS Cup championship season last year — in the 28th minute with his 32nd goal of the season. Moments later, Vela added to his new record with a spectacular bicycle-kick goal. Then, early in the second half, Vela bagged his third goal of the game, giving him 34 goals in the 34-game MLS regular season.
The goals-scored record caps an incredible season for Vela, who in August surpassed Sebastian Giovinco’s record for most combined goals and assists. Giovinco’s record was 38 set during the 2015 season with Toronto FC. Vela ultimately finished with 49 (34 goals, 15 assists).
Last season, Martinez broke the mark of 27 goals scored in a single season that was held by Roy Lassiter, Chris Wondolowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips. Lassiter set the record in 1996 for the now-defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny in the league’s first season. Wondolowski matched it for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2012, and Wright-Phillips had 27 goals for the New York Red Bulls in 2014. Martinez finished with 31 goals for the eventual MLS champions, Atlanta United.
LAFC already has clinched the Supporters’ Shield with the league’s best record. The victory also gave LAFC the MLS record for most points scored in a single MLS season with 72, eclipsing the 71 points posted by the New York Red Bulls last season.
LAFC — which finished the season with an astounding plus-48 goal differential — also matched the MLS record for most goals scored by a team in a season, equaling the 85 goals scored by the Los Angeles Galaxy during the 1998 season.Â
