The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is similar to the incredibly popular FA Cup of English football. This is a single elimination soccer tournament with a giant field of professional and amateur teams competing for the title. The winner also earns a spot in the CONCACAF Champions league. The 2019 edition of the U.S. Open Cup started with 84 teams, with teams from the MLS, USL Championship, Leagues One and Two, the NPSL and eight teams as local amateur qualifiers.
The U.S. Open Cup has been going on since May 7, and now two Major League Soccer (MLS) teams have won their way into the finals. This matchup features two teams near the top of the standings in the current MLS season. Atlanta United FC (15-9-3 in MLS) is atop the standings of the Eastern Conference, and Minnesota United FC (12-9-6) is only one point out of second place in a tight Western Conference race. The two teams last faced each other May 29, when Atlanta United FC won easily over Minnesota United FC with a final score of 3-0.
