'Star Wars': Obi-Wan Kenobi is returning with Ewan McGregor in Disney Plus series

ANAHEIM — It’s official. Walt Disney Studios is bringing back “Star Wars” legendary Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor donning the robes for a Disney+ streaming scripted series.

McGregor made at surprise appearance at the end of Friday’s panel at the D23 Expo to make the announcement with Kathleen Kennedy, the president of LucasFilms.

“After secrets and fibs and not being to talk about it, I’m thrilled to bring out a beloved member of the Star Wars family,” said Kennedy, introducing McGregor, who appeared to wild applause from the fans.

The two wasted no time getting to the discussion at hand.

“Can you please ask me if I’m going to play Obi-Wan again?” asked McGregor.

“Ewan, are you going to play Obi-Wan Kenobi again?” Kennedy asked.

“Yes,” came his simple reply, sending the audience into more roars.

McGregor said it’s been four years of denying or putting off questions about reprising the young Obi-Wan he played in the three “Star Wars” prequels “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones,” and “Revenge of the Sith.”

Alec Guinness played the older character in 1977’s “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope,” where he was killed in a lightsaber battle with Darth Vader. Guinness still appeared in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi.”

No further details about the new series were given. But Kennedy said “the scripts are written, and we begin shooting next year. We can’t wait to start production. And we have our Obi-Wan.”

The fan expo was filled with “Star Wars” news as Disney ramps up its streaming service launch on Nov. 12.

Kennedy announced that the animated “Clone Wars” series would return, and will arrive on the streaming service February 2020.

“We heard from you, the plea to bring the series back,” said Kennedy.

She also confirmed a new, still unnamed spy series featuring two characters from “Star Wars: Rogue One.” That series will star Diego Luna, who plays Cassian Andor, joined once again by Alan Tudyk, as the droid K2SO. 

Finally, producer and writer Jon Favreau showcased the first trailer for the highly anticipated series “The Mandalorian.” Starring Pedro Pascal as a gunslinger existing in a lawless time following the fall of the Empire, the series debuts with the fall launch of Disney+.
