USS John S. McCain hats sell out online after London protest aimed at Trump

President Trump responds after a story that alleges the White House asked the USS John McCain to be out of sight during the President’s visit to Japan.

Days after an activist group projected a large image of a USS John S. McCain baseball hat onto the side of a London building — according to the Wall Street Journal and other news sources –- the hat is sold out on Amazon and other online stores.

An Amazon search for USS John S. McCain hat shows the red hat is sold out and they do not know when there will be more in stock.

The hat was also sold out in black  and navy blue.

A “hip-hop” style hat featuring the USS John S. McCain in blue and black was available on Amazon for $12.22 with $5 shipping and was set to arrive within 4-5 days.

The Amazon red McCain hat shows one review giving the item five stars. The reviewer, calling themselves Kim Jong Un, said he ordered the hat Monday and claims a group of “military men” threw a tarp over his head when he went to the airport.

Online shops that personalize items do offer similar hats for between $10-30, but can take up to six weeks for the order to arrive.

The hat projection covered the side of the famous Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum was a supposed reaction to a perceived feud between President Donald Trump and the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

An activist group called Led By Donkeys claimed credit for the act Monday in tweets saying:

Hey @realDonaldTrump, we read the story about the sailors on a US warship being ordered to hide from you because you’re triggered by the name on their hats. So we turned Madame Tussaud’s into a giant USS John McCain baseball cap. Welcome to London! 

The Wall Street Journal had reported last week that the White House had requested that the U.S. Navy make sure the USS John S. McCain ship was “out of sight” while Trump visited American troops stationed in Japan.

Trump claimed he did not know anything about the decision to keep the ship out of sight, but said the move was “well-meaning.”

The president’s disdain for the late senator, who died of brain cancer in August 2018, perhaps became more evident during the 2016 presidential campaign when Trump criticized McCain’s time spent as a Vietnam prisoner of war. 

“He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump as a candidate said in Iowa in 2015. “I like people that weren’t captured, OK?”

The president did not attend McCain’s funeral, held at the National Cathdral in Washington, D.C.

Media has reported there are up to 250,000 people expected to show up for protests during Trump’s visit to London this week.

Along with the McCain hat, Led By Donkeys group also projected the United Kingdom’s approval ratings for both Trump and former President Barack Obama on the Tower of London.

Banners reading “Resist Trump” were hung in other areas of the city.

Trump claimed there were “tremendous crowds of well-wishers” that turned out for his arrival for a three-day visit to the country. He blamed the “fake news” media for attempting to search for and conflate any protests against him. He claimed he had not seen any protests yet.
