Apple on Monday gave fans their first look at watchOS 6, the next big update for the Apple Watch. The new update is expected to be available this fall.
The first thing Apple talked about was new watch faces, including a California dial, a solar face, and more. Many of the new faces support complications, which is to be expected. Apple said that as part of the new watch faces, the Apple Watch will support audible chimes—or a Taptic chime—every hour on the hour.
WatchOS 6 also now supports, audiobooks, voice memos, and a calculator, the latter of which will feature a tip calculator. All of these apps can run independently on the Watch without a companion app. As part of this new feature, Apple Watch users can browse the App Store from the wearable and even download apps independently.
Of course, it wouldn’t be an Apple Watch without new health features. One of the big new features is called “activity trends,” which will show activity over time instead of just seeing that monthly view. This information will show you whether you’re trending upward or downward.
The Apple Watch also supports a new “hearing health” feature, which will tell you if the noise around you may be harmful to your hearing. No audio is recorded or saved by the Apple Watch, reinforcing Apple’s stance on privacy.
Apple also introduced cycle tracking, which is also being built into iOS’s Health app. As well as tracking your period, you can also log fertility and choose to get a fertile window notification.
WatchOS 6 will also feature spoken navigation in Maps, smart guidance in Maps, Shazam with Siri, dynamic smart replies, and more.
