Sale of 3 coastal pap and paper mills hailed as win for 1,500 workers in B.C.

Business leaders and a provincial supervision are hailing a sale of 3 coastal pulp and paper mills as a win for a 1,500 workers employed there.

British Columbia-based Catalyst Paper Corp. has reached an agreement to sell 3 coastal mills to Paper Excellence Canada of Richmond, B.C.  They are located at Crofton and Port Alberni on  Vancouver Island and Powell River on a northern Sunshine Coast.

Catalyst CEO Ned Dwyer says when a transaction is finish it will advantage customers, employees, suppliers, communities where it operates and B.C.’s timberland products industry.

Details of a transaction have not been expelled and it will need a capitulation of a B.C. Supreme Court and during slightest two-thirds of Catalyst shareholders.

Premier celebrates move

Paper Excellence has tighten to dual million tonnes of pap prolongation ability during a 5 mills in Canada and dual in France.

In a statement, B.C. Premier John Horgan called a sale of Catalyst to Paper Excellence a “major opinion of certainty in a range and people.”

“More importantly, it will assistance keep families and communities clever as we continue to reanimate a coastal timberland sector,” Horgan said.

The range pledged to protect a pensions of retirees and workers during 3 3 Catalyst mills in a face of probable U.S. tariffs.

Deal provides certainty

Paper Excellence CEO Brian Baarda told All Points West guest horde Manusha Janakiram a understanding would yield certainty to Catalyst employees and retirees.

He pronounced there will be no changes to pensions or advantages for any stream or former workers as a outcome of a deal.

“The initial feedback from all 3 communities has been that they’re gratified to see that this transaction has been announced,” Baarda said.

“They’re gratified to see Paper Excellence … continues to make investments for a success of these 3 operations.”
