Cynthia Nixon has a nickname for New York Gov. Cuomo: 'Andrew the bully'

ALBANY — Cynthia Nixon made her first trip to New York’s capital city Monday as a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, casting Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a bully whose administration is mired in scandal and focused on rich donors rather than average New Yorkers.

The Sex and the City star announced her candidacy a week ago and has repeatedly hit Cuomo’s record over his eight years in office — as well as the corruption cases that have rocked his tenure.

“We’ve all seen it: Andrew the bully,” Nixon told reporters at a news conference at a hotel down the street from the Capitol.

“He bullies other elected officials. He bullies anyone who criticizes him. He even bullies the media with his reference to ‘your small questions.’

“But worst of all, his budgets bully our children and our families by shortchanging them, by boxing them in, by denying them the opportunities they are owed.”

Her trip was focused on providing more state aid to poor school districts – an issue she has championed in New York for a decade.

But it was also the next step in the ongoing rollout of her candidacy as runs against Cuomo in a September primary.

She took a series of questions from reporters about New York policy, and she had her first gaffe – in response to a question about corruption under New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a close ally.

“I’m not running for governor. I’m running for mayor,” Nixon mistakenly said.

She was quickly corrected, laughed and said, “Scratch that. Flip it.”
