Another shameless iPhone X knockoff appears online

The latest iPhone can’t be protected from Chinese copycats.

Multiple companies in Asia are planning devices that look just like the iPhone X. A few days ago it was the Doogee V that leaked online, and now we have the Leagoo S9. Both are Android-powered knockoffs of the premium iPhone launched by Apple in late 2017. Since these brands are smaller and only operate in select markets, there’s little reason for Apple to track them down and head to court.

Here’s the Leagoo S9:

Unlike the previous leak, Leagoo’s S9 doesn’t seem like a total copy of the iPhone X. It has a notch at the top of the display and the dual-camera setup is aligned similarly; however, you can still pick up on some differences. The edge-to-edge display from Apple’s flagship hasn’t been brought over. Leagoo instead included a thin-yet-noticeable bottom bezel stamped with its logo.

There’s also a rear-based fingerprint scanner on the S9. Apple, though, dropped that feature in favor of industry-leading facial recognition. Doogee, the maker of the other copycat, will integrate the fingerprint scanner into the V’s display. None of the knockoffs have been able to match Apple’s TrueDepth technology.

Leagoo and Doogee aren’t bringing their iPhone X-like hardware anywhere outside of China. But, if you want an Android-powered iPhone X, you should be able to find one online. Online retailers based in Asia are often willing to ship these controversial devices anywhere in the world.
