The 2018 flagship from LG won’t be the G7, according to the Korea Herald. It’s believed that the company is exploring its options to rebrand the G series after a few years of failing to gain any momentum in the mobile industry. While the new phone will likely keep ‘G’ in its name, LG is considering everything from inserting a two-digit number and installing an entirely new name.
Changing up its series names isn’t anything new for the company. Before the G series became globally-recognized, it was known as the Optimus G series. LG dropped “Optimus†in 2013, and the G2 led the way. Then, in 2015, LG introduced the V series as its secondary flagship. Both the G series and V series are well-known throughout the world, but LG feels its brand may have become a little stale in such a competitive space.
There are quite a few things LG needs to do in 2018; however, assembling a big-budget advertising campaign is at the top. If the G series undergoes a dramatic change, it’d be the perfect time for the company to reboot and run new ads.
LG confirmed that a rebrand is on the way, but the company offered no additional details.
We’ll just have to wait until the high-end device becomes official. It’s expected that LG will host a launch event for its next flagship at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, which begins in late February. And it’d be a busy week as Samsung, too, is expected to bring the Galaxy S9 to the trade show. Rebranding the G series would certainly create buzz for LG and prevent all eyes from shifting to Samsung as quickly as they have in the past.
