WASHINGTON – President Trump’s attacks on the news media are serving a new purpose: Political fundraising.

In an email solicitation, the Trump-Pence Make America Great Again Committee is asking donors to take a poll to name the worst “fake news story” of 2017.

The gimmick plays off a Trump tweet of Nov. 27, in which he proposed a contest about which television networks – excluding his favorite one, Fox News – was the most dishonest.

“We should have a contest as to which of the Networks, plus CNN and not including Fox, is the most dishonest, corrupt and/or distorted in its political coverage of your favorite President (me),” Trump said then. “They are all bad. Winner to receive the FAKE NEWS TROPHY!”
