Quentin Tarantino might be working on a Star Trek movie

As Deadline notes, this would be a pretty substantial break for the director. The only times he’s worked with other peoples’ properties in the past is one-shot episodes of CSI and ER. He’s otherwise stuck to original material. Tarantino also has a pretty full plate, as he’s working on a movie for Sony Pictures apparently set around (but not actually concerning) the Manson murders in 1969.

Even so, this would be a nice feather in Paramount and Star Trek‘s respective caps, and could attract new audiences to the franchise by mixing things up as substantially as we’d expect a Tarantino joint to do, if Paramount will give him the amount of creative freedom he’ll likely demand.

This is all in very early stages, but it’s a fun idea to think about. A movie that uses the Star Trek setting but delves into other genres could be a blast to watch and a nice shot in the arm for the long-running franchise.
