Apple patches major macOS High Sierra security flaw

A day after a major macOS High Sierra security flaw was exposed, Apple has released an update it says must be downloaded immediately. The update does not require users to restart their computer.

“Security is a top priority for every Apple product, and regrettable we stumbled with this release of macOS,” Apple said in a statement. “We greatly regret this error and we apologize to all Mac users, both for releasing with this vulnerability and for the concern it has caused.”

The security flaw was brought to light on Tuesday when a researcher explained how easy it is to bypass a password loophole found in High Sierra. The flaw gave users easy admin access to a Mac computer without a password.

If you’re running the latest version of macOS High Sierra, it would be wise to download Apple’s security update post haste. The company even says, “Install this update as soon as possible.” If you don’t manually install the update yourself, Apple will apparently push the software to all machines running High Sierra.

Apple claims it was only made aware of the security flaw on Tuesday afternoon, which is why a fix wasn’t issued earlier.

“Our customers deserve better,” Apple said.
