World of Warcraft legacy server, Nostralius, is coming back in the face of Blizzard

The developers behind the closed World of Warcraft legacy server Nostralius decided this weekend to re-open its servers six months after Blizzard forced them to shut down. The new project, which is being helmed by another group named Elysium, is being fired up after the group decided Blizzard wasn’t keeping up its end of a peace offering that was held in June.

The group stated before BlizzCon, “If Blizzard doesn’t make an announcement to honour their own core values, be sure that we will.” BlizzCon came and went without mention of World of Warcraft legacy servers, and Nostralius is now following through with its words.

The source code will be first given to an existing Legacy project which we believe to be the most in line with our core values. This server shares the volunteer spirit and passion for the game we had. Furthermore, an important part of Nostalrius volunteers are already working there, some under different names. We wish them all the best, and hope that they will become a new home for the reunited Vanilla community. We will continue collaborating closely with them. This collaboration could include additional ‘things’ to share with them if necessary to achieve this goal. In exchange, this server promised to not receive any profit from this activity.

The group is promising that it will be able to restore the hundreds of thousands of characters that had been created through its private server, and it hopes to one day share its code with other groups in order to make sure that classic World of Warcraft lives on.

No dates have been provided for when the servers will be turned back on.

Gamers will find a way to get what they want

It’s becoming more and more apparent that gamers are going to find ways to play the games they want to play, no matter how many get shut down. Vanilla World of Warcraft is still a very appealing promise for those who don’t wish to deal with the expansions, and if Blizzard isn’t going to provide for that outlet, what choice is there?

There is piracy and then there is providing a service that isn’t available through official outlets. The line can be fuzzy in most situations, but I feel it’s justified here.
