What happens to President Obama’s social media accounts next year?

The White House recently published a blog post detailing what will happen to President Obama’s existing social media accounts when the new president enters office early next year. After all, President Obama can’t continue to Tweet from the @POTUS Twitter account when he’s no longer president.

Turns out The White House actually thought a good deal about how it plans to hand-off social media accounts, and what it plans to do with Obama’s existing content. On Twitter, the new president will receive the @POTUS account while Obama will receive a new @POTUS44 username that will “retain its more than 11 million followers, but start with no tweets on the timeline.” All of the existing tweets will be archived at NARA. It said these actions are “unprecedented,” and indeed they are.

Similar actions will take place across other social networks. The new president will find a fresh timeline on The White House Facebook and Instagram accounts but will get to keep the existing userbase. “An archive of White House content that was posted to the Obama White House Instagram and Facebook will continue to be accessible to the public at Instagram.com/ObamaWhiteHouse and Facebook.com/ObamaWhiteHouse,” The White House confirmed. President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will get new accounts reflecting their status as 44th president and vice president.

President Obama’s social media content will be easy to access

The White House says it wants all of the current content to be easily available to the American people. As such, it plans to release zip files including all sorts of digital content. It’s not quite sure what the best approach is, however, and is calling on the American people to submit “creative ways to archive this content and make it both useful and available for years to come.”
