Want to play Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare? Clear out at least 70GB

Because I’m old, I remember when a floppy disk carried a meaningful amount of information. we’d buy them by the stack at places like Best Buy and Circuit City and carefully label them, each packed with 1.44MB of animated GIFs we definitely wanted to use on our GeoCities pages.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare takes up just a bit more space. 70GB minimum, in fact. That’s almost 50,000 floppy disks if you’re wondering.

Infinity Ward had published the space requirements for Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered earlier this month, saying that the two combined will take up about 130GB of hard drive space combined, and this week updated the Steam page with minimum requirements for the game:

  • OS: Windows 7 64-Bit or later
  • Processor: Intel Core i3-3225 @ 3.30GHz or equivalent
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2GB / AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 70GB available space

This is getting silly.

While you could argue (and be right) that the length of the previous generation of consoles held PC gaming back to some degree, it also held back download sizes. Once the new generation of consoles hit, downloads ballooned out of control. Some companies, like Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, have managed to keep their game sizes down. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and both of its downloads – including another massive game map for the Blood and Wine expansion – take up less than 40GB by comparison.

Infinity Ward and many other developers, on the other hand, are offering 10-hour experiences that take up these unimaginable amounts of space that seem even worse in light of frustrating data caps like the one Comcast recently announced. Some of us are lucky enough to live in metropolitan areas with ultra-fast internet connections, but if you’re in an outer-ring suburb or, worse, in another country with harder limitations on speed and transfer caps, buying the game digitally might be straight-up impossible for you. PlayStation 4 players who buy the game physically still have to download Modern Warfare if they saw fit to buy the extra-fancy edition, and that’s about 60GB. You just don’t have a choice.

While there’s no excuse for game piracy, some piracy groups specialize in compressing games down to the absolute minimum size through creative archiving, and some people pirate games just because they’re a downloadable size.

Before the doctor jabs the needle into your arm, they always say “this is going to sting a little.” If you’re planning to play Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare with or without Modern Warfare, be prepared: this is going to sting a little.
