Uwe Boll, director of panned video game movies, done making flicks

Uwe Boll will no longer make movies, video game related or otherwise. The filmmaker’s last movie was Rampage: President Down. It released to poor reception in September.

The German writer and director spoke with Metro about his retirement. He cites the lack of money and his film not having enough impact for his reasoning.

“I never had people giving me money… I’ve been using my money since 2005 and if I hadn’t made the stupid video game based movies I would never have amalgamated the capital so I could say, ‘Let’s make the Darfur movie.’ I don’t need a Ferrari, I don’t need a yacht. I invested in my own movies and I lost money.”

Boll explains that his movies are better than almost anything else made today. He suggests that critics don’t even watch his movies before panning them. When talking about Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2 in comparison to his Assault on Wall Street, Boll says his work is “better researched, it’s better written, it’s better, but it doesn’t have Michael Douglas.”

Boll’s video game movies likely hurt the industry more than they helped

I’m not taking this space to pile on Boll, though his assurance that he’s better than everyone else is grating. Boll’s made some movies that have done poorly. There’s no doubt about that.

I think video game movies would be in a better place today without his work. If Boll wasn’t making Bloodrayne (2.9/10 on IMDB), Far Cry (3.1/10 on IMDB) or Postal (4.5/10 on IMDB), perhaps other directors would have. Though, I don’t think the latter needed a movie.

If other directors were synonymous with game movies instead of Boll, they might have performed decently. Those performances would have encouraged more flicks with more financing. Instead, we get studios pumping out efforts with less commitment due to their tendency to flop.

I’m not saying we need more game movies in this world. I’m saying we need better ones, and Boll brings down the average.
