Developer and publisher Ubisoft is looking to solve one of VR’s biggest problems by blurring the line between the different headsets. Right now, there are three big platforms for “full” VR experiences: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR. Each has slightly different features and hardware. Each has their own interface and marketplace, as well. While Ubisoft can’t exactly force those different companies to all work together, they can make cross-platform play across all three major headsets work.
Starting with Eagle Flight, which released this week on PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, all of Ubisoft’s VR games will support cross-platform play.

“Making our VR titles cross-platform has been a goal of ours from the start,” said David Votypka, developer Red Storm’s creative director. “Our games feature strong multiplayer experiences, so letting friends play together regardless of which headset they own will enhance the social nature of our games and let them be played the way we envisioned.”
The fracturing of the virtual reality playerbase among different headsets is almost as big a problem as the price and space requirements of the hardware, and Ubisoft is taking steps to mitigate that problem. Their success should push other developers in the same direction and make the choice about which headset to buy more about comfort and budget than about which headset your friends have and which games are compatible.
Eagle Flight hits the HTC Vive on December 20, and Ubisoft’s other planned VR games, Werewolves Within and Star Trek: Bridge release on December 6 and March 14 respectively.
