TV app announced for Apple TV, brings TV shows and movies into one place

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage during an Apple event in Cupertino on Thursday where he kicked things off with Apple TV news. Oddly enough, Apple unveiled a product called “TV” which is a new app for the Apple TV.

Basically, the TV app is able to search through all of the applications on your Apple TV and then pull in the content, whether it’s movies or TV shows, and puts them into an easy-to-browse guide. It’s not a TV service at all, rather just a collection of everything already available on your Apple TV.

You can also add apps that require sign-in from a TV provider so that you can find live TV that might be available on networks like HGTV, History and more. Also, there’s finally support for single sign-on with your cable provider, so you don’t need to log in to every service separately. That has been a huge pain point, given how annoying the Apple TV is to use for entering usernames and passwords.

The Apple TV “TV app” can be used across your Apple devices, including iOS products like an iPad or iPhone, giving you access to your content on-the-go. Oddly, macOS support wasn’t mentioned.

You can also use Siri to search through content. Maybe, for example, you want her to show you which live football games are on, or when specific games are coming on later. You can use the remote to quickly tune in. “Siri play the Jets game,” you might say.

The Apple TV “TV app” will launch in December starting in the U.S.
