The Titanfall we’ve been waiting for – the one with a single player campaign, the one without exclusivity – is just weeks away. Respawn Entertainment has kept that single player campaign mostly under wraps, but they’re starting to let bits and pieces drip out. In a new video, some of the team is opening up about what we can expect from the long-awaited story.
Before they even started designing the game, the team took some time to build out miniature game sections called action blocks. These were basically short gameplay vignettes meant to figure out just what Titanfall 2 would be.
The result, says the team, is variety in pacing and tone, including wild action and quiet exploration, puzzles, and boss-battle moments. Sometimes you’ll be with your mech, while other times you’ll have to depend on your acrobatic pilot skills to get around. The team says they don’t want to “cage the bird” and trap your character in a bunch of corridors and rooms.
Titanfall 2 will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on October 28.
Why this matters:
Modern shooters are usually known for their multiplayer instead of their single player, but the team at Respawn is made up in big part from members of the Infinity Ward team that built the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games, the first of which especially was known for having a better-than-average story. That gives me some hope that Titanfall 2 might be able to do that as well, where more recent Call of Duty and Battlefield games haven’t.
And, of course, just a week after Titanfall releases, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare hits with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare bundled for pre-orders, so we’ll be able to see just how the two contrast.
