Apple quietly pulled the third-generation Apple TV from its digital store shelves yesterday and, behind the scenes, killed off the product. 9to5Mac was first to report on the news after obtaining an internal email from Apple.
“Effective immediately, Apple TV (3rd generation), MD/199LL/A, has reached end of life and is now discontinued,” the email said. “The Apple Supply team is going to fulfill all shippable backlog.” The “end of life” status suggests that Apple will stop issuing patches and other software updates to the third-generation Apple TV, though that has not yet been confirmed.
The move makes sense as Apple pushes further with tvOS 10, the new operating system on the fourth-generation Apple TV. Why continue to sell an old platform, after all?
