The best tech stories of 2016: Pokémon GO, Spectacles and more

Now with 2016 in the rear view, it’s a great a time to look back at the year that was. Tech was a big part of mainstream media and continued to push the envelope of cutting edge. From the growing platform of VR and AR to the phenomenon that Pokémon GO was, multiple stories dominated the year.

Some of the more notable stories include the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7.  Samsung’s flagship was on pace to be the best-reviewed phone of the year before it started blowing up. Two recalls later, Samsung officially killed it off, losing upwards of $2 billion in the process. Now it’s just a punch-line. Nike also made the super-cool self-lacing Back to the Future shoes a reality. Strapping motors on the sole, the shoes can self-lace with when you slip them on. All we’re missing is the flying DeLorean now.

Nintendo also made a big comeback with three great products. It announced its first mobile game with Super Mario Run—a resounding success with over 25 million downloads, a throwback to its hey day with the NES Classic, which sold out right away and is impossible to find a month later, and a snapshot of its future with the Nintendo Switch, a hybrid console/portable gaming system that will have its own dedicated display that will allow you to game on the road or strap it on to a stand and play on your big screen.

But none of these topped the biggest story of the year: Pokémon GO. Eight months after its release, the fad has died completely; but in the middle of summer, Pokémon GO was a phenomenon. And no, that is not hyperbole. During its height, over 50 million users were playing it. People started buying external batteries to play longer and walked many miles just to hatch a few eggs. The movement eventually ended and people got over it, but Pokémon GO burst onto mainstream like few other movements do.

Through all the negativity that surrounded the year, there were many great stories. For the time being, let’s pour one out for the crazy year that 2016 was and hope 2017 is just as fun with tech stories.
