Samsung to offer S Pen accessory for Galaxy S8, report claims

Samsung will offer an optional S Pen accessory for its upcoming Galaxy S8, according to new reports out of China. The move could make the Galaxy S series more appealing to Galaxy Note fans, many of whom are still mourning the loss of the Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung’s S Pen stylus requires special display technology, so you can’t take the stylus out of a Note device and use it on other Samsung smartphones. But it’s thought the South Korean company is planning to make the Galaxy S8 S Pen-compatible.

Early prototypes of the device actually had an S Pen built-in, like the Note, according to a tipster on Chinese micro-blogging network Weibo. But it is claimed Samsung decided against an integrated model, choosing to offer the S Pen as an optional accessory instead.

This means the company doesn’t need to make room for the stylus inside the Galaxy S8 itself, and can therefore use that space for a bigger battery and other components while still giving stylus fans the option to buy and use one should they choose to.

The move sounds even more plausible when you consider the Galaxy S8 is expected to offer a 6-inch display — by far the biggest we’ve seen on a Galaxy S device. In fact, a 6-inch display would make the Galaxy S8 bigger than the Note 7 and every other Note device that came before it.

Of course, this is just speculation for now, so it’s unclear how much the optional S Pen might cost, or whether it’s even true. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 at an event in New York next April, so we should find out then.
