Samsung confirms Galaxy S8 will come with new AI assistant

Samsung Galaxy S4-S Voice

Not too many Samsung fans have good things to say about S Voice, the South Korean company’s answer to Siri and Cortana. But it seems S Voice’s days are numbered. Samsung has confirmed it will launch a new AI assistant with the Galaxy S8.

Samsung is “seeking to rebound from the Galaxy Note 7’s collapse and differentiate its devices,” according to a report from Reuters. Its latest move comes just a month after the company acquired Viv Labs, the startup that created AI platform Viv.

Viv is what will replace S Voice on Samsung’s next-generation smartphones, starting with the Galaxy S8 next spring. Samsung hasn’t offered many details just yet, but it has confirmed that Viv will work nicely alongside third-party services — just like its rivals.

“Developers can attach and upload services to our agent,” explained Samsung Executive Vice President Rhee Injong during a briefing with Reuters.

“Even if Samsung doesn’t do anything on its own, the more services that get attached the smarter this agent will get, learn more new services and provide them to end-users with ease.”

S Voice has never really been able to catch up with its rivals, and now that services like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are even more advanced, the gap has become wider. Samsung is hoping to close it — and take a lead of its own — with Viv.

Viv won’t just be available in Samsung phones, either. Later on, the assistant will also makes its way into other Samsung devices, including its TVs and even refrigerators. We’ll find out more about the plan next February when the Galaxy S8 makes its official debut.
