If and when you fire up Prey from Arkane and Bethesda, you’ll have the choice between playing either a male or female lead. We knew there was a male protagonist, but the choice between genders is a revelation.
Both are named Morgan Yu, a name that works for either character. This choice won’t have any bearing on the story, for what it’s worth. Here’s Arkane.
While this choice won’t change the story or how you interact with the world – because Morgan Yu is Morgan Yu, and he or she will be defined by the choices you make – it’s yet another way that Arkane is saying yes to the player.
We don’t have a release date for Prey yet. The game will hit the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platforms. It’s due sometime in 2017.
Why this matters:
Gender selection has been a constant in gaming since the dawn of the RPG and simulation genres. However, for tight narrative tales focused on action and story, picking a gender is not the norm. This might mean that Prey isn’t the focused game we think it is. Or, it could mean that allowing players to choose genders more freely is becoming the standard. The quote from Arkane in the story seems to indicate that latter possibility.
