Overwatch: Bans coming to players who used Mei’s wall in obnoxious cheat

overwatch-mei

Freeze! Don’t move.

There’s a glitch in Overwatch‘s small map, Ecopoint Antartica. Mei can stand near the steps close to spawn, activate her wall and send her (and teammates) on top of the map. From that vantage point, Mei and her friends can shoot the opposing team while those victims can’t do anything.

Ah, glitches.

Blizzard’s taken notice, though. In a thread that asks when “Mei’s wall glitch will be fixed,” Game Director Jeff Kaplan answers directly with word of incoming bans. First, he indicates that the bug has been tracked and a fix has been deployed. He explains that it “was surprisingly tricky” to “track down.” Kaplan goes on with stern words for the cheaters.

“This bug is clearly an exploit and we consider this cheating. Do not attempt to reproduce this bug. If you see someone abusing this mechanic, please report them.

We will be taking action against those who abused this exploit. Overwatch is a PvP experience so that means exploiting game mechanics like this comes at a cost to those you are competing against. We take aggressive action against people who abuse game mechanics, hack or cheat. This case is no different.”

Here’s the glitch in action, by the way.

Console users need a report feature, Blizzard

This is all wonderful, but Blizzard needs to give console players the option to report cheaters. That’s currently not present. How, exactly, will people be banned in an efficient way on those platforms for cheating? I’m not sure it’s possible as things currently stand.

In the meantime, don’t cheat. K?
